Sustainability Leadership: The Role of Liberal Arts Education
Sustainability is a complex problem, and solving a complex problem involves navigation through complex adaptive systems both within and outside of an organization (Metcalf and Benn, 2013). The complexity of sustainability arises from the dynamic interactions of massively interconnected systems: people, social institutions, and the natural environment. As social institutions that bridge new and old generations, universities play a crucial role in nurturing adaptable future leaders who can function within and across networks encompassing societal, national, and global contexts. Consequently, the multifaceted nature of sustainability challenges calls for a comprehensive and integrated approach to leadership education.
From the perspective of a liberal arts education, the pressing question arises: how can we develop sustainability leaders who possess the requisite attributes to navigate and address such ever-evolving complexities? Our 2024 AALAU President Forum aims to engage members in profound contemplation and dialogue on the diverse challenges educators encounter in building institutions capable of withstanding the adverse impacts of economic instability, climate change, geopolitical uncertainty, and humanitarian crises.
This Forum seeks to explore and identify the institutional frameworks and strategies necessary to equip future leaders with the knowledge, skills, and resilience required to effectively manage and mitigate the intricate and dynamic challenges of sustainability.
